Cleo The Caterpillar Lesson 8: Being Responsible

DESCRIPTION:

Professor Crawly uses his friend Cleo as his example for this lesson because of her diligence in taking responsibility to groom her beautiful furry coat.

Success comes to people who are responsible. They know what they need to do and they take responsibility for it. They don't expect others to do the work for them, which is what irresponsible people do. They take ownership. It is doing your chores at the designated time, making your bed, putting your toys away, hanging up your clothes or putting them in a drawer. It's keeping your room picked up and clean, doing your homework and not putting things off or procrastinating. Your preschoolers can start learning this lesson, with simple things they need to be responsible for. Use Cleo to help you teach them how to start being responsible.

These books are a series of lessons for children ages 4-6 years old, on positive attitudes for life experiences and illustrated through the use of bugs, slugs, and other crawly things. They are taught by a wise old ant named Professor Crawly who uses all his crawly friends to teach his lessons.

This is a series of books too help kids accomplish three things:

1)  Become less frightened of crawly things at an early age

2) Teach the benefits achieved in our environment by the crawly things on our planet

3) Teach them encouraging lessons and important principles about self-image and interaction with others

Online Book Club Review:

***3 out of 4 stars***

Gary Chase’s Professor Crawly series includes 15 children's picture books featuring the wise ant and his creeping and crawling friends. Each book focuses on a different positive character trait while familiarizing young children with crawly friends. In Professor Crawly's Cleo the Caterpillar Lesson 8 , the clever ant introduces a new fuzzy friend. The responsible caterpillar takes good care of her colorful coat and anticipates the day when she will become a beautiful butterfly. The rhyming story emphasizes responsible behavior, diligence, hard work, and perseverance.

The eighth book in the series is 24 pages. It is professionally edited and features whimsical illustrations that are a collaboration between Chase and his granddaughter. Delaney designs the "look" of the character, which inspires her grandfather's illustrations. Preschoolers and slightly older children will be amused by the story's rhyming text, amusing illustrations, and clever wordplay, such as Cleo's well-stocked beauty salon and a "future social butterfly" sign.

Cleo models responsible behavior by doing her chores, and I particularly like that the story also focuses on taking responsibility for actions and attitudes. Chase effectively conveys this lesson through contrasting illustrations. While Cleo works and volunteers in Pillarville, several disgruntled caterpillars complain and blame others.

I appreciate the colorful collaboration of illustrations. Overall, I rate the entertaining picture book 3 out of 4 stars . It adequately teaches the concept of being responsible to children ranging from 4-6 years old. In addition to the targeted audience, the story will also appeal to parents, grandparents, and teachers of young children.
